As with most other nurseries, the focus at Burchell Nursery, according to Tom Burchell, is continued breeding success. "We have always had a very successful breeding program and we continue to improve upon varieties of peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, cherries, almonds, and rootstocks," says Burchell. "Three of the top five peaches planted in California have come from our breeding program." Growers are getting more experience with the Cornerstone rootstock, notes Burchell. "It is our new hybridroot-stock with excellent vigor, anchorage, and yield efficiency." Burchell also emphasizes that nurseries in California have a very strict certification program that keeps nursery stock very clean and disease free. "This program has been in place for more than 20 years and it has helped maintain disease-free trees."
