Almost the entire community of fastener engineers will swear there are several dozen factors that affect the tightening of a joint. While only about 20 or so are significant, most engineers probably do not give these much thought when designing a joint. Sure, the 50-40-10 torque loss due to thread friction is in the back of their minds, but do they really give much more than a passing thought when factors affect the balance? How about plating? Often, the coating is upgraded partially through the design process with little concern about its impact on the final preloading. Europe is mired in thoughts of coefficient of friction as the "solve all" solution to tightening while dismissing factors that impact the security of joining. What are the things that affect tightening?
