Passenger miles are now exceeding pre-9/11 levels with resultant delays at the major hubs, Boeing projections indicate that carriers will turn to smaller, more fuel-efficient and less costly single aisle jets to circumvent the passenger frustrating hubs and directly serve regional destinations. They are designing accordingly (the 717 single aisle) while still launching new wide-bodied craft (the 777) for the long hauls.
