Setting up a new aquatic holding facility is something that lots of people have been challenged with in the last few years. Even if in theory it should be quite easy, there are some important aspects that must not to be underestimated. At many Institutions it has been commonly accepted that the main Principal Investigators (Pis) should be allowed to select their preferred type of housing system, based primarily on their research needs and experimental protocols. On the other hand, at some Institutesthe requirements are led by logistics: which room was to be allocated and where tanks have to be placed. So, typically, researchers have been the ones with the awareness of the main aquatic housing systems and the facility managers have been the ones with the awareness of the facility/location and logistical challenges of where the systems have to be installed. In some cases this situation has led to serious misunderstandings and last minute problems.
