I read with interest the study by Bailey at al. measuring the performance of the Spectrum M3 non-invasive extracorporeal saturation monitor (Spectrum Medical LLP, Gloucester, UK) [1]. Being external to the circuit, it is clear that this device could offer significant benefit in the continuous measurement of oxygen saturation, haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration (Hb), whilst avoiding additional turbulence. This would be particularly so in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) circuits, where bypass is maintained for several days.
