A heads up for ultrasound.

Vascular and regional procedures utilising ultrasound imaging guidance are now commonplace. Ideally these are best performed in areas where ambient light levels are low so that the image can be clearly seen on the monitor, with the screen best placed in front of the target rather than to one side. In our institution most regional blocks are performed in a purpose-designed, dedicated area of our post anaesthesia care unit, using a slaved monitor mounted on an extending wall bracket which can be pulled directly over the patient. In an operating theatre, ambient light levels are often high, and with limited space it may be difficult at times to position the machine in this way.
