Hydrogenation of Aromatic Compounds over Sulfided Catalysts

Sulfided Co-Mo/Al_2O_3 and Ni-W/Al_2O_3 were prepared by an impregnation method with an aqueous solution containing a chelating agent (nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine-N,N,N',M'-tetracetic acid (CyDTA)), followed by drying at 120 deg C and sulfidation with 5% H_2S/H_2 under 1 MPa at 400 deg C. Thus prepared Co-Mo/Al_2O_3 and Ni-W/Al_2O_3 showed higher hydrogenation activity as well as hydrodesulfurization activity than those prepared without the chelating agents. On hydrogenation activity, the addition of the chelating agents showed larger promoting effect for Ni-W/Al_2O_3 than for Co-Mo/Al_2O_3. In case of hydrogenation of o-xylene under 5 MPa at 400 deg C, the addition of CyDTA enhanced the activity of Ni-W/Al_2O_3 for ca. 70%.
