CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF Viola lactiflora

The genus Viola belongs to the family Violaceae and consists of approximately 500 species widely distributed throughout the world [1]. The plants of the genus Viola are widely used as traditional medicinal herbs for the treatment of respiratory tract infections,colds,pain,fever,cramps,and skin diseases [2]. Viola lactiflora Nakai,a perennial herb,belongs to the genus Viola and is mainly distributed in Jiangsu,Jiangxi,Liaoning,Zhejiang,and Sichuan Province in China [3]. To the best of our knowledge,there has been no published information on the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the essential oil of V lactiflora. Therefore,the present study investigated the chemical composition of the essential oil(EO) obtained from the aerial parts of V. lactiflora Nakai using GC-FID and GC-MS and evaluated the in vitro antibacterial activity using disc agar diffusion and micro-broth dilution methods.
