Thermoanaerobacter species degrade branched-chain amino acids to a mixture of their corresponding branched-chain fatty acids and alcohols in the presence of thiosulfate; only acid formation occurred when Thermoanaerobacter strains were cultivated in co-culture with a hydrogenotrophic methanogen. Increased pH(2) at high liquid gas phase ratios increases the relative concentration of branched-chain alcohol. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
