Nontraumatic subperiosteal orbital haemorrhage in an anaesthetised patient with surgery in the prone position

An otherwise healthy 48-year-old man sustained a large skin defect on the posterior aspect of his right leg in a road traffic accident. He was scheduled for split-thickness skin-graft surgery. After induction of anaesthesia, neomycin ophthalmic ointment was applied to his eyes, which were then taped shut. After being positioned in the prone position, his head was placed on a gel-filled horseshoe-shaped headrest, with care taken to ensure that there was no pressure on his orbits. The anaesthetic course was uneventful.
