摘要

The purpose of this paper is to understand the different binding mechanisms between starch and lates. Two kinds of coating color using a starch or a latex as a binder were coated on a wood-free base paper under several drying conditions and both calendered and non-calendered coated paper samples were prepared. New concept #alpha# and #beta# which represent the micro-scale and the macro-scale binding efficiencies were respectively introduced to explain the dry-pick resistance of coated paper samples. In case of using starch as a binder, the dry-pick resistance of the samples was strongly influenced by the interval time between coating and drying, but not by the drying conditions and calendering. This behavior could be explained by #beta# depending on so-called binder migration toward coated layer surface. In case of using latex as a binder, the dry-pick resistance of the samples was slightly influenced only by calendering. This behavior was explained by #alpha# depending on the mechanical deformation by caledering. The difference of binding mechanisms between starch and latex could be essentially understood with the new concept of micro-scale and macro-scale binding efficiencies.
