Results are described from resent R & D work in academic and industrial groups on polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) utilizing direct feed of methanol fuel. A key issue to the commercial product of small DMFCs is anode performance on direct feed streams of methanol solutions producing CO species in the liquid phase, as well as methanol cross over. R & Ds of various fuel cells including portable DMFCs are reviewed briefly. The contribution of recent electrode catalysis studies to the progress of DMFC is noted.
