90 Years After Kitty Hawk: A Historic Finding

Considering the importance of the Wright Flyer to aviation-indeed to U.S.-history, it hasn't always been treated with the respect typically accorded artifacts of such iconic status. After its retirement a century ago, the plane was exhibited in the Science Museum of London, later disassembled, packed into crates and transported stateside, and eventually sold by the Wrights' heirs to the U.S. government for one dollar. Subsequently, it was exhibited in the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building, moved again to the Institution's Air and Space Museum, and once again dismantled for refurbishing in 1985.
