This feature shows how Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) has installed one of the world's most advanced casthouses with an initial capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year. Rising out of the sand on a six square-kilometre site at Al Taweelah, between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is the EMAL aluminium smelter, a greenfield project that is on its way to becoming the world's largest single-site primary aluminium smelter complex. EMAL is a strategic joint venture partnership between DUBAL (Dubai Aluminium Company) and Mubadala (Mubadala Development Company). Phase one will cost approximately 5.7 billion US dollars and it was scheduled to start production in early 2010. It will have a production capacity of 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum, increasing to 1.4 million tonnes at the end of phase two.
