The effect of irradiation (8, 50 or 100 Gy) of Rauwolfia serpentina [Rauvolfia serpentina] cultures on indoline alkaloid biosynthesis was studied. At 8 Gy, some stimulatory effect and earlier initiation of alkaloid synthesis were observed. For the other doses, alkaloid synthesis was decreased. When a 70-day-old tissue culture was irradiated (0.5, 8 or 100 Gy), only 0.5 Gy resulted in an increase in alkaloid concentration. At 8 Gy there was a decrease in alkaloid accumulation, but AAE (acetylamylineesterase [?]) activity, total esterase activity and protein content were unaffected. Irradiation at 100 Gy was accompanied by the decline of all the parameters except AAE activity.
