A database of retention indices (RI) in reversed phase HPLC, including information about 73 components, has been created for the identification of natural flavonoids. This database contains both experimental RI values and data recalculated from previously published absolute retention parameters. Relative absorbances Arel = A(lambda1)/A(lambda2) at 254/220, 360/254 and 360/220 nm are used as extra analytical parameters. It has been shown that the typical RI window for aglycones is 800-1100 index units, whereas it is only 600-800 i.u. for their more hydrophilic glycosides. In 3-O-, 7-O- and 3,7-di-O- glycosides, one glycoside fragment decreases the RI (relative to the RI of corresponding aglycones) by 107? i.u., and 2 decrease it by 230?6. The increase in the number of compounds which are characterized by RI and Arel values makes it possible to increase the reliability and unambiguousness of HPLC identification.
