Changes in physiological and biochemical indices during insect ontogenesis under the influence of heavy metal salts

We studied growth and development of the domestic fly Musca domestica (strain Cooper) during larvae growth on the substrate with introduced heavy metals acetates (Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) at various concentrations. Median lethal dose (LD@50) was determined for Cu and Cd salts. Toxic concentrations of Cu and Cd decreased the weight, elongated larvae development, and affected ecdysis and metamorphosis. We traced the changes in the activities of acid phosphatase, monophenol monooxygenase, and nonspecific esterase during growth and development of the larvae, pupae, and imagoes. Inhibiting effect of Cu and Cd salts on acid phosphatases and monophenol monooxygenase, respectively, was established in vivo. Median inhibition index (I_(50)) of the heavy metals was determined in vitro for the studied enzymes.
