Virtual sound sources that were made of correlated noise and perceived as moving or stationary were used for investigation of the response properties of the auditory cortex, as measured with functional MRI (fMRI) and SPM 99. Stastically, the responses to the stimuli in the auditory cortex were found predominantly in the contralateral side to the sound image. However, a minority of the subjects showed different patterns of lateralization. Differences between Heschl's gyrus and planum temporale were found in orientation selectivity, where the latter was more selective contralateral sound.
