Import license applications inch higher

August steel license import applications edged up 0.3 percent from the previous month, according to data released by the Commerce Department's Import Administration. August imports are poised to hit 2.35 million tonnes, up from July preliminary figures of 2.34 million tonnes and 5.4 percent higher than 2.23 million tonnes a year earlier. Major product gains within the carbon and alloy sector in August included semifinished material, which rose 7 percent from July to 521,128 tonnes due to major increases from Brazil offsetting a decline in shipments from Mexico.
