I liked the study on pushing techniques in labor byYildirim and Beji when I first saw the manuscript. When I told Diony (I have reached the age where itis permissible to call even the editor in chief by herfirst name) how much I liked it, she seemed a bit surprised. She had liked it, too, but wondered at myuncharacteristically enthusiastic response.I wondered a bit myself. Why did it stand out? Itwas a fairly routine type of study, an undistinguished, straightforward randomized controlled trial, mountedto compare a woman’s spontaneous pushing in theexpulsion stage of labor with the Valsalva pushingthat was accepted practice in their community. Nothingspecial about it. My positive reaction to the papermust just reflect my biases. Yes. I am biased.
