Like many steel industry executives, Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. president and chief executive officer Mario Longhi is not a fan of steel futures. But if he had to choose, Longhi would prefer a physically settled futures contract vs. a financially settled one. "This is one alternative, if it could be physically controlled and not just a paper affair: physical inventories fully backing up the transaction," said Longhi, who also serves as chairman of the Steel Manufacturers Association. "This is the only model that has provided some kind of reasonable, sustainable approach."
