The ongoing global economic downturn has sent prices of aluminium plummeting on the world markets. It has also dealt a major blow to the aluminium recycling industry which was thriving until recently, though the signs of a downturn have been visible for some time. This is a remarkable turnaround from the industry mood evident earlier last year. The price of aluminium cans had reached 85 cents a pound (1.87 dollars /kg) at a number of recycling plants and some recyclers were bragging about processing 11 million pounds (5ooot) at their individual plants, up from the nine million pounds (4080t) processed by some in recent years. Many processing centres are now sending only three truckloads a week compared to the several sent each day last year. Industry analysts warn that this is likely to get worse.
