TMS 2005 Annual meeting and Expo

As in previous years, the 'Light Metals' programme of the TMS annual conference proved the largest and a new plenary session bringing together executives from the six largest producers was the most popular draw. The 134th annual meeting of the US based The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) took place this year 14 - 17 February in San Francisco. Some 3800 delegates attended this wide ranging gathering, which addressed topics ranging from nano technology through nuclear imaging to aluminium and steel in 2200 listed presentations. Not all presenters materialised, sometimes providing useful time for discussion with those who did present but at other times providing unscheduled gaps as chairmen were briefed to keep to the publicised starting times to enable delegates to switch sessions to catch a particular paper of interest. Indeed, in a first for TMS, a special 'Featured Presentations' session of the 'best' eight papers from across all sessions was made with authors repeating the papers presented in their appropriate sessions. Two of the presentations in this session were directly relevant to the aluminium industry, and a third indirectly, relating to sequestration of CO_2 by producing synthetic forms of the minerals serpentine and olivine which show a high degree of stability.
