摘要

When Pizarro sweptinto Peru in theearly 1500s, heencountered anempire whose size and wealthwas unrivalled. High in the AndesMountains, the Inca had built avast civilization under the divinerule of a series of immortal em-perors. Needless to say, the pre-tense of immortality is not easyto maintain. To circumvent theembarrassing fact of an emper-or's eventual death, the deceasedwas mummified. His preservedstate allowed him to con-tinue to attendofficial func-tions and handdown opinionsvia a group offemale medi-ums. His ac-cumulated wealth passed intothe care of his panaqa, or lin-eage, which was responsible formaintaining and expanding it.
