Hayden presidency to center on diversity and equity of access

Equity of access and diversity--two of ALA's five key action areas--will get a boost during the presidential term of Carla Hayden, the Association's new vice-president/president-elect, who takes on her duties in July 2003 (AL, June/July, p. 10). In a June 27 American Libraries interview, Hayden, director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, said she plans to develop a model for 21st-century library practices encompassing all formats, all people, all means of delivery, and all types and sizes of libraries. Hayden, who is the fourth African American to serve as ALA president, said her election "shows that the Association's members are able to look at the qualifications, experiences, and viewpoints of people before and over other things that sometimes keep people from making rational decisions." She recently met ALA's first African-American president, Clara Stanton Jones, who is now 89.
