Subacute effects of edible film from modified sago starch in rats.

Metabolic effects of edible film prepared from modified sago starch on female Sprague-Dawley rats were determined, in order to develop guidelines for the safe use of edible films as food packaging materials. Rats were fed low or high doses (2 g or 5 g kg--1 body wt.) of the edible film for 28 days. Repeated intake of high doses of edible film to rats led to significant changes in liver function (total bilirubin) and renal function parameters (creatinine), but had no significant impact on other metabolic parameters tested, including aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase activities, blood lipid profiles, and cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, total protein and glucose concn. It is suggested that the lower dose of edible film tested would be less likely lead to toxic effects.
