摘要

This study investigated the in vitro postprandial serum glucose lowering activity of soluble and insoluble dietary fibers isolated from Cassia fistula and Tamarindus indica seeds, in comparison with natural guar gum (GG) and tragacanth (TRAG). Effects of the test samples on diffusion of glucose in a glucose dialysate system and on the activity of alpha-amylase were determined. The isolated dietary fibers diminished postprandial glucose levels in the dialysate system by >50%. T. indica soluble fiber demonstrated greater inhibitory activity against glucose dialysate than C. fistula soluble fiber, GG or TRAG. T. indica insoluble fiber (TIF) and C. fistula insoluble fiber (CIF) also showed significantly greater glucose lowering activity than the control and standards. All of the tested fibers exhibited significant inhibition of alpha-amylase activity compared to the control. Results of this research suggested that the isolated dietary fibers could be effective in the treatment of hyperglycemia in humans.
