The Hypersonic Flight Experiment (HYFLEX) vehicle, which is a part of the research into the H-II Orbiting Plan (HOPE), has been developed by the National Aerospace Laboratory and National Space Development Agency of Japan and it was successfully launched by the J-I launch vehicle on February 12, 1996. This paper describes an outline of the HYFLEX vehicle and technical results in the fields of aerothermal dynamics, flight controls, thermal structures and thermal protection systems, which have been obtained through the development of the vehicle by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
