New Chained Library of Hereford Cathedral Takes Royal Prize

UNITED KINGDOM: Following a decade of planning and a million-pound donation from John Paul Getty Jr., Hereford Cathedral's new Mappa Mundi and Chained Library museum officially opened in May of last year, with Queen Elizabeth presiding. Located at thewest front of the 900-year-old cathedral in Hereford, northwest of London near the Welsh border, the new structure has now won the 1997 Royal Fine Art Commission/British Sky Broadcasting Building of the Year Award. Designed in a contemporary interpretation of Gothic style, the facility is, said one of the award judges, "a building in the hands of a master."
