THERE are reasons to smile for Canadian lot feeder, Gerald Van Osch. With rising cattle prices, low interest rates and a government willing to pay to put solar panels on his shed roofs (see breakout), Mr Van Osch doesn't mind showing his pearly whites. A rocky road through a biosecurity crackdown during the BSE outbreak in 2003 has made the producer appreciate of the good times. And those good times are now. "The prices right now are really good because of the export markets that have opened up. Thewhole food industry has gone up and beef has actually gone up with it, so it's excellent. It's about time," Mr Van Osch said.
