Protracted journey towards individual animal identification

THE INTRODUCTION of the national livestock identification scheme (NLIS) is grinding on in many cases at the expense of commonsense and will among some sectors. There is no doubt that whole-of-life history for individual animals will be a requirement for market access to most international destinations - this history will be required as early as January 1 for some feed-lot product. Until NLIS is nationally implemented, the onerous task of interrogation through means of the paper trail of national vendor declarations (NVDs) will be required to guarantee this history. Electronic technology has the ability to circumvent the paperwork involved in this system, providing both cost and time-saving benefits for the entire industry.
