A WALGETT district feed-lot operator has been named finalist in the NSW Farmers' Young Farmer of the Year awards. Jim Friend knew his business had to become more flexible if he was to survive the 'droughts and flooding rains' which come with life on the land in the state's north-west, Jim and his wife Jill, from Tal-barear near Walgett, seized the long-running drought as an opportunity to diversify their 6100-hectare cropping and cattle operation by establishing a 950-head feedlot.
