LOTFEEDERS in the US have been using vaccination as a means of controlling BRD in feeder cattle for a considerable time. The term pre-conditioning was coined in Oklahoma in the late 1960s, however it has taken quite a while for preconditioning to gainwidespread acceptance in the US as well. A study put together by a group of epidemiologists in the US, looking at 3.2 million calves marketed via a video livestock auctioneering service, found that calves managed similarly to the Feeder Guard two-shot protocol increased in value during the period from 1995 to 2005 from 5.4c/kg to 17.4c/kg.
