Small size and low cost electronic ballast for hf fluorescent lamps

Harmonic current problems are increasingly prevalent due to the widespread use of electronic equipment. Guidelines to limit harmonic current distortions by electronic consumer appliances have been issued by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Electronic ballasts also have to meet these requirements to limit line current harmonics. In order to conform to the guidelines relating to electronic ballasts, several single stage PFCs have been developed that combine the PFC function with a high frequency inverter function. This configuration has been applied to electronic ballasts to reduce the harmonic components in the input current caused by the trend towards reduced cost and size. In this paper, the progress of the development of the single stage PFC is described. The proposed novel single stage PFC with the self-oscillating driving circuit is then discussed. Also demonstrated in this paper is a developed electronic ballast that can cut costs by 21%.
