Method of evaluating environmental impact

Evaluating the environmental impact of each of the company's constituent organizations is a key element in constructing and operating an ISO 14001 compliant environmental management system. This evaluation needs to be conducted on the basis ofobjective and quantitative criteria. This article presents a method in which evaluation standards are established for various categories of environmental impact and the effects of a given activity are evaluated by category. The method also includesmetrics for comparing the magnitude of the impact in each category and synthesizing a broad perspective on environmental impact that complements specific evaluations. This method of evaluating environmental impact satisfies Liebig's minimum law inbiology: it is simple, yields consistent results and is easy to maintain.
