With the need to serve more and more dynamically changing global markets and the evolution of paradigms, organisation and technologies for next generation production Systems, the need arises for adequate support for this engineering challenge. New processes, new facilities and partnerships are required, but established methods that are available to cope with theses changes are too slow, not integrated and not comprehensive enough. The regional and inter-regional nature of customer demands and industrial competition requires an adaptable approach to product specification and manufacturing processes. The vision of the MISSION proposal is to build a bridge from today's tools and region oriented factory design processes, leading to the support of planning and design of an extended enterprise or virtual enterprise environment. The MISSION Vision goes beyond current isolated tools, it establishes a new integrated Modelling Platform including modelling and simulation tools. The goal of MISSION is to integrate and utilise new, knowledge-aware technologies of distributed persistent data management, as well as conventional methods and tools, in various enterprise domains, to meet the needs of globally distributed enterprise modelling and simulation. This will make available methodologies and tools to support the definition of appropriate manufacturing strategies and the design of appropriate organisations and business processes. This goal will be achieved by establishing a modelling platform incorporating engineering knowledge and project information that supports space-wise and control-wise design, evaluation and implementation over the complete enterprise life cycle. This will be the foundation stone for architecture to support engineering co-operation across the value chain of the entire extended enterprise.
