A comparison was made of 2 groups each of 20 pigs, receiving unspecified farm feed rations (controls) or the Provim Starter, Grower and Finisher premixes (experimental group). For the 2 groups respectively, age at 120 kg body weight averaged 216.3 and 199.1 days, daily gain 659 and 763 g, consumption of FU/kg gain 4.91 and 4.42, slaughter weight 120.8 and 121.3 kg, carcass weight 83.9 and 86.8, dressing percentage 69.4 and 71.5, meat pH 5.7 and 5.8, water retention capacity 79.3 and 83.3%, meat colour (extinction) 45.3 and 45.6, intramuscular fat 39.3 and 38.2, meat protein 13.6 and 14.3%, and lactic acid concentration 420 and 395 mg%. The concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in the backfat was higher in the experimental pigs than in the controls (0.484 vs 0.434).
