The inheritance of the gene Run8 for resistance to loose smut (Ustilago nuda [U. segetum var. nuda]) in barley was analysed relative to several marker genes controlling morphological characters: Vt/vt for 2-rowed or 6-rowed spikes; Zeo/zeo for dwarfish plants with dense spikes or tall plants with lax spikes; Pub/pub for pubescent or glabrous leaf blades; Hs/hs for pubescent or glabrous leaf sheaths; K/k for furcate or awned spikes; Cer-yy/cer-yy for glossy or waxy spikes; B/b for black or yellow palea; as well as the HrdA, HrdB, HrdF and Hor3 loci for storage proteins and the Adh, 6Pgd and Gpi loci for enzymes. In total, 149 F2 plants and their progenies, which were obtained by crossing form CI13664 carrying the Run8 gene with a line carrying several dominant markers, were analysed. Run8 proved to be linked with the B gene located on the long arm of barley chromosome 5 (1H) (recombination index 20.33 ?3.82). The Pgd3 locus was inherited independently from all other loci tested in this hybrid combination.
