Parasitic and semiparasitic plants are very harmful to cultivated plants. Certain characteristics of nitrogen metabolism of these harmful plants are the consequence of their partial or total parasitism. These characteristics include loss of the ability to synthesize a range of metabolites produced by the host plant and acquisition of some specific metabolic patterns. Characteristics of nitrogen metabolism can be important in the recognition by a parasitic plant of its host plant.
