Clinical Trials and Their Surprises

The recent report of the halting of the Symplicity HTN-3 Trial was a shock to those anticipating a new interventional age in the treatment of hypertension. The Symplicity HTN-3 Trial was a randomized comparison of bilateral renal artery sympathetic denervation technique using a Medtronic System to lower arterial blood pressure. The sympathetic neural ablation procedure was compared to a "sham control" group undergoing part of the catherization procedure, but not the radiofrequency ablation.
