What to plant to attract birds

If you have a garden and love wildlife, chances are you'll have a few well-stocked birdfeeders around the place. There is no doubting their effectiveness at attracting and supporting a range of birds - up to 30 species now visit my garden, including tree sparrows, siskins, yellowhammers and bramblings. The major drawback is the cost, which can increase substantially during cold periods - as it did during the dank and dismal month of May this year, when my birds were desperately seeking food for their young.
