Possibilities of reducing effort during provenance trials.

Provenance trials with Scots pine [Pinus sylvestris] were established in the Rhein-Main area and the mountains of Hessen, Germany. Data from 6 and 14 year old trees in 12 trials were used, originating from 4 seed sources. Parameters were survival rate, tree height and stem shape. Results were compared with 2 variants counting fewer trees (either by having fewer trees (variant 1) or by having only 2 repetitions (variant 2)). Higher efficiency was recorded for variant 1 and this was confiemd by statistical tests. Estimates with variant 1 outperformed those with variant 2 by about 25%. In the case of limited resources, preference should therefore be giving to smaller plots instead of fewer repetitions..
