日本産温带性ホンダワラ属1回目:温帯性ホンダワラ属とは?

Genus Sargassum is macro brown algae making the bed from the intertidal to the subtidal zone. Sargassum beds have very important roles in coastal ecosystems. And some species of Sargassum have been used as food for a long time in Japan. The genus Sargassum is the most species-rich group among the brown macro algae, and is widely distributed from tropical to temperate regions around the world, with over 350 records of validated species. In Japan, about 60 species of Sargassum are distributed. Thallus of genus Sargassum has many organs (i.e., holdfast, stem, main branch, leaf, vesicle and receptacles) compared with other macro algae. It is too difficult to distinguish the species, because these organs show various morphological variations. By this serialization, I will report the detailed morphological characteristics and distribution of subgenus Bactrophycus distributed over the temperate zone area in Japan.
