Watasenia scintillans is a semi-oceanic, endemic species in the Japanese waters, and belongsthe monospecific genus Watasenia of the family Enoploteuthidae. Taxonomy and nomenclature of W.scintillans are overviewed. Enoploteuthidae consists four genera, including Watasenia, and 39 speciesfrom the warm waters of the world. At least 16 species are recorded from Japanese and adjacent waters.Four genera are diagnostically defined here on their morphology, and the species distributed in the Japa"-nese water are listed with distribution and habitat information. Phylogenetic relationship of Enoploteuthidaeis reviewed.
