Laser beam combiners, which can be used for white light laser sources, are reviewed from a viewpoint of the laser light illumination and laser display. Laser beams with three RGB (Red-Green-Blue) primary colors are combined into one single beam by using the laser beam combiner. Such combiners are classified into three categories, i.e., a mirror-prism type, an optical fiber type and an optical waveguide type. Optical waveguide-type RGB combiners are particularly useful because they enable us to construct extremely small laser combiners integrated with laser sources. High output efficiency can be realized by using a laser combiner based on a directional coupler, which provides an output efficiency of 96% and a size of 60 × 6000 μm.
