Long term effect of stump treatments on incidence of butt rot in Norway spruce [German]

First rotation stands of Norway spruce in private and public forests in the Swabian Alb region (Baden-Wuerttemberg/Germany) were monitored for Heterobasidion annosum butt rot. Seven stands treated with sodium nitrite and the same number of untreated ones were monitored for butt rot during a second thinning campaign, c. 12 years after first thinnings. The total of 700 trees showed, that butt rot incidence in treated stands was by 71% lower than in untreated stands (Tab. 1).
