Who should maintain a honey bee exhibit at the zoo? Zookeepers may be knowledgeable on the care and feeding of lions, tigers and bears, but what about keeping honey bees in a nonstandard colony? The task of management generally goes to the local beekeeper.Over the years, the honey bee exhibit at the Milwaukee County Zoo has been very popular with kids and adults alike. The original observation hive was dedicated on May 18, 1991, in the Heritage Farm area of the zoo. Credit was given to the Milwaukee Waukesha Beekeeping Association (MWBA) for the design and care of the exhibit. Tony Dazer, and Paul Wein maintained the observation hive for many years. They were long-time members with the MWBA. The original structure used part of a tree trunk with a windowand light to see the bee hive, and this was placed in the aviary building. Unfortunately, the hive caught fire in 1994, damaging the exhibit and killing the bees.
