Stock your ponds with the right fish

FROM an eagle's view, the Northeast farmscape is dotted with ponds. I With some attention and minimal expense, most farm ponds can be stocked with fish and turned into recreational areas. You and your children or grandkids can enjoy an evening of fishing within walking distance, or just sit at water's edge and soak in the tranquility. And you won't even need a license or have to burn a buck of gas to get there. That's what Carol Austin of Dekalb, N.Y., had in mind as she stocked her pond last year. She worked with St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District to select fish species best suited for her water, then placed her order. The SWCD bunches orders and cuts cost to individuals.
