A simple method to estimate effect of residual stress on fracture stress

A method is proposed to estimate the effect of residual stress on fracture stress by using a simple model consisting of the Dugdale model and the Beremin model. There are known two contradictory rules in the residual stress effect, i.e. the K additive rule and the conservative principle rule, which are unified on the present method consistently and shown to hold in each proper condition. It is examined which rule is the case in the working condition of the current welded steel structures. Effect of warm prestressing is also discussed.
