IHI quality management was established based on the US systems brought by the licensers and US military specifications. This was then developed into a Japanese version through company-wide quality management activities, namely TQC, and contributed greatly to product quality improvement. The international standards on quality systems, ISO 9001, have brought fresh viewpoints into the IHI system, such as definition of responsibility, authority and interrelation, or implementation according to documented procedures. When the establishment of quality systems at business units and factories has come to the end of the first stage and the systems have steadily bee implemented, the effectiveness of quality system was accepted, and the quality system is applied to experimentation at research laboratories or design and development of software systems.
